When to Schedule Your Child's Scoliosis Assessment

Early detection is crucial for effectively managing scoliosis, a spinal condition that often develops during growth spurts in childhood and adolescence.
Our Chiropractic & Family Wellness Center team, led by Dr. Pamela V. Ford, is committed to delivering quality chiropractic care to members of our community in Carrollton, Texas.
Learn how we can help with scoliosis and when we may recommend a spinal assessment.
1. During routine checkups
While routine pediatric exams may include basic scoliosis screenings, a specialized assessment by a chiropractor can provide a more in-depth evaluation of spinal alignment.
If your child is approaching puberty, consider scheduling an assessment even if no symptoms are present.
2. When there are signs and symptoms of scoliosis
If your child exhibits any of the following signs, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment promptly:
- Uneven shoulders or hips
- A visible curve in the spine
- One shoulder blade projecting more than the other
- Uneven waistline
- Difficulty maintaining proper posture
- Complaints of back pain or discomfort
To get a good look at your child’s spine, the National Scoliosis Center suggests you have them stand comfortably straight with their knees relaxed and feet facing forward. Look for signs such as uneven shoulders or hips.
Then have your kiddo bend forward slightly at the waist with their arms hanging loosely by their side, and check for a sideways spinal curvature or hump at the shoulder blade level.
A scoliosis curvature can develop rapidly during a growth spurt, so don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment if you spot any of these troubling signs.
3. If there’s a family history of scoliosis
Scoliosis has a genetic component, meaning children with a family history of the condition may be at a higher risk. If a parent or sibling has scoliosis, early screening with a chiropractor can help in proactive monitoring and early intervention.
4. During growth spurts and puberty
Scoliosis often develops or worsens during periods of rapid growth. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends specific screenings for children: two screenings at ages 10 and 12 for girls and one screening at age 13-14 for boys. Dr. Ford can assess spinal development during these crucial years and suggest preventive care or treatment options if needed.
5. When there’s an injury or postural concerns
If your child has recently experienced an injury to the back, a chiropractic assessment can help identify any changes that might contribute to scoliosis development.
Likewise, poor posture from excessive screen time or carrying a heavy backpack can impact spinal health. Dr. Ford can tackle postural concerns, offering guidance for developing and maintaining a healthy posture.
6. When a school or sports screening indicates an issues
Many schools conduct scoliosis screenings as part of routine health checks. If a school nurse or sports coach raises concerns about your child’s spinal alignment, scheduling a chiropractic assessment is a proactive next step.
